Nicollet County Court Record Types
District Court is the local trial court for the major court record types. Civil records may include complaints, motions, affidavits, orders, judgments, settlements, evictions, name changes, conciliation matters, and judgment collection. Criminal records can include complaints, charges, probable cause, bail or bond orders, hearings, pleas, trial entries, sentencing, probation, warrants, fines, restitution, and disposition. Family records include divorce, custody, support, paternity, and domestic matters, with some access limits. Probate files include estates, wills, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, inventories, accountings, and orders.
Traffic citations filed in Nicollet County are District Court traffic cases. A traffic court record is not the same thing as a Minnesota driver record. Restricted Nicollet County Court Records
Some records are public only in part, or not available remotely. MCRO does not display Domestic Abuse Order for Protection and Harassment Restraining Order case types on the internet because of federal restrictions. CHIPS and Juvenile Delinquency Felony 16 case types are excluded from remote display. Public documents in civil commitment case types are not available through MCRO remote access. Party street addresses and comment fields are also omitted, although criminal sentencing condition comments may display.
Sealed and expunged records are also limited. Minnesota's Clean Slate Act went into effect on January 1, 2025, and the research notes BCA and Judicial Branch programmatic review of records. Expungement can remove a record from ordinary public view, but it does not always delete the record or prevent every authorized use. A person trying to understand a missing record should identify the system first: MCRO for court records, BCA for public conviction history, Sheriff's Records for arrest or incident reports, and DOC for correctional status.

Nicollet County Charges and Warrants
Criminal cases involve more than one record system. Sheriff's records may document the arrest or incident. The County Attorney reviews investigations and files complaints for many charges. MCRO shows filed court charges once a case exists. BCA public criminal history is different again: it is a statewide conviction-history system, not an arrest log and not a full court case file. The County Attorney prosecutes all felonies in Nicollet County, gross misdemeanors and misdemeanors outside St. Peter and North Mankato, and certain gross misdemeanors inside those cities. Nicollet County Courthouse History
Nicollet County court history is tied to early Minnesota history. The first courthouse in St. Peter was built by the St. Peter Company as a temporary courthouse when residents expected St. Peter to become the state capital. After that plan failed, the company initiated the 1859 election that moved the county seat from Traverse des Sioux to St. Peter. The first two-story frame courthouse cost $5,000 and later served as St. Peter's city hall before burning in 1886.

The current courthouse was completed in 1881 for $26,638 and was designed by Edward P. Bassford and E.W. Stebbins. A 1998 tornado damaged the 1880s building and destroyed the steeple. A replacement steeple followed later that year, and restoration work helped reopen the building in June 2000. A three-year remodeling project began in March 2001, added 35,000 square feet, and the building was officially renamed the Nicollet County Government Center in May 2001.
